Selfie-portraits

2014, oil on canvas, a 40 x 60 cm

The popularity of selfies depicts our age: the age of increasing separation between people on one hand and extensive anynomous sharing on the other hand. Selfie is a strange combination of loneliness and narcissism. If a selfie is taken by an artist, it can be seen as a modern version of self-portrait, continuing the tradition of portraiting the artist’s self. But it gives a different viewpoint to the traditional self-portrait both metaphorically and physicly. These paintings are investigating how does the popularity of selfies affect the reproduction of the self and which are the parallels with tradition self-portrait.

The first part of the project has been conducted and exhibited in UNESCO Art Camp in 2014, in Andorra. Work in progress.
